Mixed media. Avocado, wisteria branch, steel wire, fabric sequins.

Holding up the sky
Holding up the sky.
Avocado skins glowing, ‘green gold’.
A fleeting echo, and our mind slips.
Sacred Monarch, the butterfly.
Goddess, of Joy, and of Souls departed.
While back in Mexico, endangered,
and wings tattered,
their home denuded by avocado acres.
Consider our greed.
84 gallons of water,
to grow each avocado,
while a Monarch weighs half a gram.
Which must sit heavier in our hearts?
A delight in guacamole,
or survival of the Monarchs.
Which to savour?
